THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
In 1981, I began my 28-year tenure with The Associated Press in Washington. As the AP’s Senior White House Photographer, I covered the White House, summits, inaugurations, shuttle launches, Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics and international stories around the world. I was involved in the early use of digital cameras, including using an experimental electronic camera to transmit the first photo of President George H.W. Bush’s inauguration forty seconds after he put his hand down after being sworn in.

President George W. Bush picked up a splitting axe and shovel on a working tour of the Adirondack Park near Wilmington, New York yesterday for the 32nd anniversary of Earth Day.

The “hat toss,” now a traditional ending to the ceremony, originated at the Naval Academy in 1912. The “hat toss” has since become a symbolic and visual end to the four-year program.
