U.S. President Ronald Reagan winces and raises his left arm as he was shot by John Hinckley Jr. as he left a Washington hotel on March 30, 1981, after making a speech to a labor group. After he was seriously wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt, Reagan wrote in one of his presidential diaries: “Getting shot hurts.” The images won the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for the coverage of the assassination attempt.
